One of the closest places we work

Whiteley sits just up the road from our base in Locks Heath, off junction 9 of the M27, which makes it one of the quickest areas for us to reach and one we're in and out of regularly. Between the housing estates, Solent Business Park and the retail park around Whiteley Shopping Centre, it's a mix of domestic and commercial work that suits the range of jobs we take on.

Almost all of Whiteley's housing has gone up since the 1990s, so we're mostly dealing with modern consumer units and cabling rather than tracing decades-old wiring. That doesn't mean there's nothing to do: new-build estates bring their own recurring requests, particularly EV charger installations for households with a driveway or allocated parking space, additional circuits for home offices and garden rooms, and outdoor sockets and lighting for gardens that are often smaller and more deliberately laid out than on older estates. Where a consumer unit was fitted to a basic spec when the house was built, upgrading it to properly support an EV charger or a garden office supply is a common piece of work.

Solent Business Park and the units around Whiteley Way bring a different kind of job: office fit-outs, periodic testing for tenant businesses, and increasingly multi-charger EV installations for staff and visitor parking. We're used to working with facilities managers and business owners here, scheduling around office hours and keeping disruption to a minimum while units stay open.

Even within newer housing, the standard of the original electrical installation isn't always consistent, and it can vary noticeably between different phases of the same development. Some plots were built with a heavier-duty consumer unit and spare capacity in the board from the outset, while others on an earlier phase of the same estate were fitted to a more basic spec that leaves less room for an EV charger or extra circuits without some upgrading first. We check this properly during a survey rather than assuming a new-build automatically has capacity to spare.

Whiteley Shopping Centre and the surrounding retail units also bring their own steady stream of work, from lighting and socket circuits during a unit fit-out to periodic testing once a tenant is trading. As with the business park, we're used to working with landlords, agents and shop managers directly, and to scheduling visits that don't interrupt a retail unit during its opening hours.

Local conditions

What comes up most often in Whiteley

Being mostly newer housing and commercial stock changes the kind of jobs we're called out for compared with older parts of South Hampshire.

Consumer units not sized for EV charging

Some new-build boards were fitted to the minimum spec at the time and need assessing or upgrading before a charger can be added safely.

Driveway and parking layout affecting charger position

Estate layouts with shared driveways, in-and-out parking or allocated bays away from the house all affect where and how a charger can be installed.

Garden offices and outbuildings without a dedicated supply

As more people use garden rooms for work, the temptation to run an extension lead needs replacing with a proper armoured supply and its own protection.

Business park units needing periodic testing

Office and light industrial units at Solent Business Park need inspection and certification that fits around a working day rather than closing the business down.

Multi-charger installs for staff and visitor parking

Business park sites are increasingly asked to provide EV charging for several vehicles at once, which needs proper load assessment rather than adding chargers one at a time.

Inconsistent spec between development phases

Different phases of the same estate were sometimes built to different electrical specifications, so a consumer unit that looks modern doesn't automatically mean there's spare capacity for a charger or extra circuits without checking first.

How quickly can you get to Whiteley?

Whiteley is just off junction 9 of the M27 from us, so scheduling is usually quick to arrange.

How is the cost worked out?

Every job is priced individually once we understand the property or unit and the scope of work, with a written quote provided before anything's booked in.

Can you install an EV charger on my driveway?

In most cases yes, once we've checked the supply and parking arrangement; we're OZEV registered and qualified for EV charger installation.

Does my consumer unit need upgrading before an EV charger goes in?

It depends on the board fitted when the house was built; we'll assess it during the survey and let you know honestly if an upgrade's needed.

Do you carry out multi-charger installs for businesses?

Yes, we carry out EV charger installations for staff and visitor parking at business park units, sized correctly to the site's supply.

Can you supply power to a garden office?

Yes, we run proper armoured supplies to garden offices and outbuildings with their own protection, rather than relying on an extension lead.

Do you do periodic testing for Solent Business Park units?

Yes, we carry out testing and inspection for commercial units, scheduled around office hours.

Will I get a certificate for the work?

Yes, depending on the job you'll receive an EIC, EICR or minor works certificate, with notifiable work reported to building control, giving you a proper record for the property file.

Do you fit out retail units around Whiteley Shopping Centre?

Yes, we carry out lighting, socket and small power installations for retail fit-outs, and periodic testing once a unit is trading, arranged around the shop's opening hours.

Is every phase of a Whiteley estate wired to the same standard?

Not necessarily; different phases of the same development can have been built to slightly different specifications, so we always check the consumer unit and existing circuits during the survey rather than assuming a newer estate automatically has spare capacity.
