This work suits anyone who has bought or is about to take delivery of an electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle and wants to charge at home overnight, or businesses wanting to offer charging for staff or customers. Circuit design and cable choice

EV charging circuits are typically run in armoured or appropriately protected cable sized for the sustained current the charger draws, with cable routes chosen to minimise voltage drop over distance, particularly where the charger sits some way from the consumer unit, such as at the end of a long driveway.

Protective devices, including RCD protection appropriate to the charger and installation type, are selected to work correctly with both the charger's internal protection and the property's existing consumer unit.

Domestic versus workplace installations

Domestic installations are usually a single charge point on a dedicated circuit from the household consumer unit, sized around one vehicle's typical overnight charging pattern.
